The Maryland State Bar Association is a 125-plus-year-old organization that supports legal professionals in Maryland and beyond. We serve the profession by providing continuing legal education, reference books, content, networking events, and more. We are looking for an experienced Marketing Specialist to help us create greater awareness of MSBA's vast diversity of offerings, build and expand our brand recognition in the market, and execute our marketing strategy and initiatives.

This hybrid role will allow the successful candidate to work most days remotely while supporting in-person learning and events on an as-assigned basis throughout the year.

Recruiting Timeline:
MSBA will accept applications for this role through Friday, December 27, 2024. All applications will be reviewed in early January. Selected applicants will contacted in early January for initial phone interviews, followed by two rounds of interviews via Zoom. The successful candidate is expected to start in mid to late February 2025.

Position Overview:
The Legal Publications Manager oversees MSBA's comprehensive legal publications program, including treatises, guidebooks, and course books, while building and maintaining relationships with subject matter experts, authors, contributors, and editors.

Primary Responsibilities:

Publications Management
  • Oversee end-to-end publishing process for legal treatises and books
  • Develop and maintain 36-month publications plan
  • Manage project timelines and deadlines
  • Coordinate with offshore design team throughout formatting/layout process
  • Work with printing vendors on specifications and quality control
  • Obtain ISBN and CIP numbers for publications
  • Review and approve marketing strategies and book covers

Content Acquisition & Development

  • Identify and recruit expert authors for publications
  • Manage relationships with volunteer authors throughout the publishing process, including the routing of author agreements
  • Source and obtain pre-formatted files of previous editions
  • Edit all submitted content and resolve queries with authors
  • Coordinate with indexing vendors for content tagging
  • Ensure quality control through final proof review

Program Growth

  • Actively seek new publication opportunities
  • Monitor performance of licensed publications to external partners and make recommendations for product positioning based on those trends
  • Develop new author relationships within legal community
  • Identify emerging legal topics for potential publications
  • Assist in planning publications budget
  • Review and update internal publishing standards
  • Maintain house style guide and serve as the internal subject matter expert for content styles

Required Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree required
  • 4+ years of experience as a practicing attorney
  • Admitted to practice in one of the following jurisdictions:
    • Maryland (highly preferred)
    • Pennsylvania
    • Virginia
    • Delaware
    • District of Columbia
  • Reside in one of the following states:
    • Maryland (highly preferred)
    • Pennsylvania
    • Delaware
    • Florida
  • Publishing industry experience, including knowledge of the publishing process and standards
  • Strong project management and time management skills
  • Editorial expertise with legal content, including decision-making, developmental editing, proofreading, fact-checking, excellent written communication
  • Ability to understand and explain complex legal topics
  • Knowledge of Chicago Style Manual and Bluebook citation
  • Experience with author recruitment and management
  • Understanding of legal publications market
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Strong interpersonal skills

Technical Skills

  • Proficiency in Asana or similar (Mondays, Smartsheet, etc.)
  • Experience with project management software
  • Expertise in Google Workspace
  • Familiarity with content management systems
  • Experience with association management software and learning management systems preferred but not required
