It’s an unfortunate fact that crime is an everyday occurrence in our society. As any bail bondsman can attest, people from all walks of life wander over to the wrong side of the law — and some of them are unforgettable. The year 2014 brought us some strange crime stories that have us wondering, “What were they thinking?” Check out our roundup of the best of the best  — or shall we say the worst of the worst:

Man Arrested for Pointing a Banana at Police

In November, 27-year old Colorado resident Nathen Channing was arrested for pointing a banana — that’s right, a banana — at police officers.  Officers reported Channing pointed a “yellow object” at them which they feared might be a weapon. Why did he do it?  Channing admitted that brandishing the banana at officers was a prank he’d planned to record for YouTube.

Woman Wearing “I Heart Meth” T-Shirt Arrested for…Meth

Also in November, 37-year-old Deborah Asher of Kentucky was arrested for trafficking and possession of methamphetamine. In her booking photo, Asher is wearing a black T-shirt with the words “I Heart Crystal Meth” emblazoned boldly across it. Wonder if she has one that says “I Heart Prison”?

Thieves Steal Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer Sculpture

‘Tis the season — to steal and plunder? In December, thieves made off with a 200-pound statue of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer that locals described as “iconic.” The statue sat above Ranchview Road in Los Angeles County for 50 years before being stolen. The culprit? A trailer park resident who displayed the statue as his own Christmas decoration. The statue was returned to its home — just in time for Christmas.

College Students Steal, Kill, and Eat Rival Frat’s Pet Chicken

Three University of Vermont students were accused in December of stealing a hen from a rival fraternity, killing it, then eating it. Although few details were released, Deputy Chief Tim Bilodeau said,  “a knife was used”, and the incident appeared to be a misguided prank. The Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity, who owned the hen, decided not to press charges against the students.

Man Tries to Outrun Cops by Posing as a Marathon Runner

A man carrying Ecstasy tablets in an Altoids tin went on the run from the cops by posing as a marathon runner. During the 2014 Chicago Marathon, spectators reported seeing a man “acting suspiciously” in the stands. When the man spotted approaching police, he joined the pack of runners in an attempt to blend in. He didn’t get far — police tackled 29-year old Brian Duffy and placed him under arrest. Duffy was charged with possession of a controlled substance, resisting arrest and reckless conduct.
